The museum was inaugurated on 1 November 1982. The museum was established within the Castle of Kruja, which was the epicenter of the Albanian Principalities and the embodiment of the defeat of the Ottoman army, of three consecutive battles, during the 15th century. This museum is a memorial and is treated as a northern Albanian tower. The museum complex is divided into several sections, which are arranged chronologically according to the main history events. In this museum many objects, documents, original bibliography and authentic reproductions are displayed, which clearly document the history of the Albanian people in the 15th century and further. One can access the various galleries, such as: the Gallery of Antiquity and Early Middle Ages, the Gallery of the Albanian Principalities, the Gallery of the Ottoman Invasion and its Confrontation, the Gallery of Medieval Castles, the Gallery of Albanian Resistance, Scanderbeg’s chancellery, library, the hall of princes, the pinacotheca, and lastly, the gallery and echo of heritage. In these galleries ceramic, bronze, iron, copper objects, numerous facsimiles, original icons, writings, a bell dating from 1462, original swords of the 15th century, etc., are displayed.

The average visit in the National Museum Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu lasts around 40-50 minutes.

What to see:

The museum is a memorial, where History intertwines with artworks (murals, sculptures, stained-glass, etc.), objects and supportive documentation.

The Museum follows a chronological line, with the first hall displaying archaeological objects dating from antiquity and early medieval period, and the following halls displaying information during 1405-1468, the period when Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu lived.
